Sir Howard Hodgkin at the NPG

London

The National Portrait Gallery opens its historic exhibition 'Howard Hodgkin: Absent Friends' dedicated to the late British master today.

Considered one of Britain's finest contemporary artists, on Thursday, 9 March 2017, Sir Howard Hodgkin died aged 84.

Consistently treading a delicate line between figuration and abstraction – with the start and endpoint of each painting a specific subject but realised with his idiomatic patterned brushwork – Hodgkin termed himself “a representational painter, but not a painter of appearances. I paint representational pictures of emotional situations.”

The exhibition is the first to be devoted to Hodgkin's portraiture, and features his last work: the self-portrait, 'Portriat of the Artist Listening to Music' (2016)
