Thomas Newbolt

Thomas Newbolt (b. 1951)

Thomas Newbolt was born in London in 1951 and attended Camberwell School of Art between 1970 and 1974. Between 1974 and 1975 Newbolt was awarded the Italian Government Scholarship in Florence in 1974 and he was made a Fellow-Commoner in Creative Arts at Trinity College, Cambridge. He held this position until 1981, when he became the Harkness Fellow at the University of Virginia and the University of Wisconsin. Newbolt taught on and off during the late 1970s at Camberwell School of Art and between 1985 and 2000 at Anglia Polytechnic University. Thomas began teaching at The Royal Drawing School in 2002. His work has been shown internationally in both solo and group exhibitions including in London, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. His work is held in various public collections including Trinity, Murray Edwards and Churchill Colleges, Cambridge, Univelever and the Bank of England. 

Thomas Newbolt is perhaps most well known for his evocative oil portrait paintings, often painted without a model present and at dusk, so that the blurring effects of fading light and the inconsistency of memory are united in broad, impasto brushstrokes to create suggestive, powerful portraits. In 2013 Newbolt was the recipient of the prestigious Ruth Borchard self-portrait prize.
