Tony Bevan

Tony Bevan (b. 1951)

Figurative painter, born in Bradford, Yorkshire. He studied at the School of Art there, 1968–71, Goldsmiths’ College School of Art, 1971–4, and Slade School of Fine Art, 1974–6. Bevan’s work was included in The British Art Show, 1984–5, Human Interest at Cornerhouse in Manchester, 1985, Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, 1986, and John Moores Liverpool Exhibition, 1987, winning a prize there, 1997–8. He exhibited widely abroad. His first solo show was in 1976. There was a retrospective at ICA in 1988 and major ones at Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1993, Michael Hue-Williams Fine Art, 2000 and 2002, and Abbot Hall, Kendal, and Milton Keynes Gallery, both 2003. These revealed Bevan as a singular painter of unsettling male figures and groups.
