Carel Weight (1908 - 1997)
Carel Weight began by studying singing before deciding to become a painter. He studied first at Hammersmith School of Art from 1928 to 1930 and then at Goldsmiths College from 1931 to 1933, when he became a member of the Society of British Artists. Weight taught at the Royal College of Art from 1947, and was a professor at the Painting School from 1957. He joined the London Group in 1950, the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1954, and became an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1955.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London from 1931 and had his first solo exhibition in 1933. In 1945, Weight was sent as an official war artist to Italy, Greece and Austria. He painted a mural for the Country Pavilion at the Festival of Britain on London's South Bank in 1951.
